Trainer Tip-Reduce Holiday Stress

Lee’s Summit fitness friends, here are some tips to Reduce Holiday Stress,  from Life Transformations Personal Trainer Molly Wichman.

The holiday season may be a fun time for kids, but it is a time of stress for many adults. From worrying about gifts, to coming up with creative ways to impress the in-laws, the stresses of the holiday season can make it anything but merry.  Taking the time to de-stress your life can let you enjoy the holiday season and really get into the holiday spirit. Use these tips to reduce your stress level and enjoy the holiday season as much as your kids.

Make a list– Don’t forget last minute items.  Make a list and check it twice.  Include who can complete the task, shopping or chore.  Make sure to divide up tasks for all family members.  Kids can help too!

Get your shopping done early – Waiting until the last minute will do nothing to reduce your stress level. Vow to get your shopping done early this year – then sit back, relax and enjoy the rest of the holiday season.

Set a smart budget – Don’t let the “Ghost of Christmas Past” haunt you. Overspending is a frequent source of holiday stress. Avoid this common problem by setting a budget and sticking to it.

Get creative- Handmade crafts and baked goods make great gifts, and are more memorable.  Also, think about shopping local.  You never know what you will find at the local Farmer’s Market, Craft Fair, or Ladies Shopping Events.

Get moving – Exercise is a great way to reduce stress, so don’t be afraid to get moving. Regular exercise will make you feel better – and help you avoid packing on those holiday pounds.  Keep your regular workout routine during the holiday season, it’s not the time to stop. Need some motivation or accountability, try out a personal trainer. If you don’t have one add in some bodyweight exercises, light stretching, or some cardiovascular exercise.  Help your waistline and de-stress!

Spend time with your kids – Set aside some time to just relax and have fun with your kids. Play an old fashioned board game, throw a ball around in the back yard, or just sit and chat.  You never know  what you can learn at the breakfast or dinner table.

Spend time on yourself– Whether it is a trip to the spa, a deep tissue massage, or a warm bubble bath, do something for yourself.  Relax and banish stress.

Remember the power of giving- When you give this season, whether it can be with your money, your time, or your talent, remember most importantly to give with your heart. It is true for most people that giving “just feels good,” so give freely in the way that you are able and watch your stress level decrease.  From serving at a local soup kitchen, volunteering in your church’s Christmas performance, donating gifts to local non-profits, getting involved in the community reminds us all of what Christmas really means.

When your holiday season is getting the best of you, think of some of the above tips.  Be flexible and patient.  Take a few deep breaths and slow your body down.  Don’t worry about the “perfect” holiday dinner.  Instead, focus on spending precious time with your family and/or friends. Don’t fret if the holiday cookies come out a little crispy, the dog knocks over the eggnog, or you have to make an extra trip to the store. Focus on the holiday season!

From our family to yours…have a happy and stress free Holiday Season!
